Adults Mentoring Children is a program designed to offer at-risk youth a positive, supportive relationship through one-to-one matching with a volunteer mentor. These matches are designed to give youth the additional support needed to demonstrate that there are positive alternatives for them. These matches are made in the hope that they will evolve into long term relationships that empower youth to make appropriate choices. The program addresses the problems of family dysfunction and truancy by bringing non-threatening, caring, older adults with a wide variety of life experiences into the lives of at-risk youth in need of nurturing and positive role models. The volunteer mentor and youth work together to master the skills needed for successful transition into adulthood and to help youth explore career opportunities. Program services are offered countywide. At least 225 matches are maintained on an annual basis. The average duration of service is 2-5 years although some participants remain in the program for as long as 9 years.
