The ALPHA Program offers targeted prevention services for at-risk elementary school students during the regular school year and the Summer Bridge Program. The program draws from feeder schools throughout Pinellas County: Skyview, Blanton, Clearview Avenue, Fairmount Park, Seventy Fourth Street, Pinellas Park, Rawlings, Sexton, and Cross Bayou. Students participating in the program are typically performing below grade level and may be disruptive in class or socially withdrawn. These behaviors are considered early risk indicators for future substance abuse, delinquency, poor academic achievement or dropping out of school. The program is operated in cooperation with the Pinellas County School System and services are funded by DCF Suncoast Region, PCSB and JWB. The program works to insure that students are successful in school through improved grades, exhibition of appropriate behavior, acceptance of responsibility for their own actions, confidence and optimism. The program reinforces the learning of responsible and productive behaviors. Students are also provided with special remedial tutoring, individual and group counseling, and life management skills training. Special training for the teachers and parents of ALPHA students, including parenting skills training is also provided. The Summer Bridge Program includes integrated math, reading, writing, science, a curriculum enhanced with computer technology, participation in arts and crafts projects and weekly field trips. The ALPHA Program is located on the campus of Blanton Elementary School. The program capacity is 60 youth during the school year and 30 for the summer program. Children enrolled in the program participate in the center 5 days a week for the entire school year. The summer program is 6 weeks long.
