Healthy Families Pinellas (HFP) is a home visiting family support program for families with pregnant mothers and newborns over a 5-year period. It is a collaboration between seven community based organizations: the Pinellas County Health Department (lead agency), Family Service Centers of Pinellas, YWCA of Tampa Bay, Bayfront Medical Center, Morton Plant Mease Health Care, St. Petersburg General Hospital, and Operation PAR. Services provided by the program include home and hospital-based assessment, in-home parent education, tracking and assessment of child development, bonding and attachment, immunizations, family centered coordinated case management, transportation, development of a Family Support Plan, crisis intervention, and referral to medical and other community-based services. HFP has been instrumental in supporting families identified through the assessment phase as being high risk for child abuse and neglect. HFP is based on the highly successful Hawaii Healthy Start program and is the largest of more than 450 approved Healthy Families America sites.

The focus goal of HFP is supporting new or expectant parents; preventing child maltreatment; and the promotion of positive parent-child interaction through home visits by Family Support Workers and ancillary Healthy Families staff. HFP is one of several home visiting family support programs based out of the Pinellas County Health Department. The success of this home visiting program is due largely to stable funding that has incrementally expanded early intervention prenatally or immediately after birth; use of paraprofessionals as home visitors; longevity of services until the child reaches age 5; utilization of a blended model (professional, paraprofessional, medical and social work); incorporation of specialized professional positions as wrap-around services; and collaborative efforts by several community-based organizations. The program has five major offices throughout the county with teams covering the entire county. Length of service is up to 5 years.
